Trees With Roots has been established by Finlay Mitchell, who has, very successfully, designed, established and managed private woodlands throughout Scotland and Northern England since graduating in Forestry in 1976. Over this half Century Finlay has developed a deep respect, understanding and knowledge of the many benefits provided by trees - not just commercial, landscape, ecological and environmental but also cultural and historical, and recently he noted a lack of trees with real interest and character being available for all to plant and enjoy.
Finlay’s vision is creative and emotional: Trees with Character to keep History Alive for more generations to enjoy and benefit from.

Trees With Roots grows young trees from acorns collected at historically significant parent trees across Scotland and Northumberland. Each tree has real Character and carries the story of its place of origin, enabling living connection to landscape, history and heritage.

Finlay Mitchell, who has worked with trees all his life and has a deep passion for and knowledge of Heritage trees, traditional landscapes and the environment. The business brings together professional forestry knowledge, respect and support from landowners and an opportunity to improve availability of trees with interest and character in a creative and responsible manner.

Acorns are carefully collected from verified heritage trees, historic landscapes, estates, castles, ancient woodlands and culturally important sites, with landowners permission and support. Collection is always done responsibly by hand taking only a small amount leaving plenty for natural regeneration and wildlife in accordance with sound, traditional forestry practice.

Trees are supplied as very strong and resilient 2 year old cell grown plants. Mostly 60cms high.
All with roots carefully wrapped in wool from Hebridean sheep and enclosed in hessian bag for protection during transport.

Yes, every tree comes with heritage documentation, detailing the parent tree, its location and the historical and cultural significance of the site from which it originates.
